I thought it was a good idea for the challenge. Day late and a dollar short, to me, means, missing out on an opportunity. Photographing wildlife seems to be continually saying "Oh, the shot I COULD have gotten!". So missing the incredible fluke shot, and only getting the tips of the tail (if anything at all) seemed the perfect example of day late and a dollar short.

Plus, I found this rather a fascinating look at the details of the tips of a whale fluke.

Here's more of the shot that people want to get. (it would have been nicer if the tail was higher -- but that's as high as it went)

I love this image! Since I live 1000 miles from the nearest ocean, the few times I have seen whales "in person" have been exciting and memorable. The first time I was in Alaska on a halibut boat. I was in back and the guys were in front - fishing. A whale actually breached...close enough to the boat that I could have gotten a tremendous shot. However, I was so gobsmacked at actually seeing a whale that I stood there, mouth open, in awe, and completely forgetting the camera in my hands. It was like time stood still. The memory is seared in my brain - the picture...well, I do have the memory. Your image is a perfect representation of the challenge and underscored in my humble opinion. Thank you for bringing back to mind a memory I cherish.

I like how the image is blurred in the foreground and just behind the subject of the image. Not sure how it fits the theme, though.
