Thanks for all the great comments and the great voting! I knew this was a good pic, but I was worried about getting the emotion I felt across. Evidently I succeeded! You can see the original photo here and the entire pier here. I would have liked to include a picture of it before it collapsed, but, alas.. Anyway, if you're interested you can see one here.
Oh.. for those wondered what happened: A combination of neglect and weather brought it down around christmas time.. I was able to get this shot due to a really low tide the day I was shooting. There were tons of other people out that day, but luck was on my side and I only got one of them in the shot (you need to brighten up the pic to find them though!)

| nice composition. it begs the question, what happened here. it looks like you've got some glass reflection or something like that in your sky??? otherwise it's a pretty technically sound image. I suppose it could be a cloud but it looks fairly mechanical. I'm not sure what the rules are but I'd burn in the highlights there to give some more contrast in the sky if in fact that is a cloud. It could give you a nice added layer to the pic. |

| Superb image. To me the shot speaks more of desolation than despair. Never the less, since it's only a question of interpretation, and your shot being so good, I'm giving it a 9. Great use of B/W by the way. |

| Wonderful. I hope you didn't do that just so you could take this photo of it :-) You made the right decision by bringing all that foreground into the image. It wouldn't have had the same impact if you had stood up and left it out. Good job! |
