Challenge: Broken (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Panasonic DMC-FZ10
Location: A chair in my room, covered with black shawl
Date: Dec 12, 2004
Aperture: F/5.6

Date Uploaded: Dec 12, 2004

I tried different subjects, like broken matchsticks, broken kidney beans et.al. Suddenly what struck my mind was, why should it be something destructively broken? Why can't it be broken for some reason. The old Nutcracker came in for my rescue. 'Tried various forms and colours of nuts. 'Tried emphasizing on the dynamics of the cracking process. The effect is in front of you...

On the editing front, nothing much is done. Just a little bit of Unsharpen Mask and Blinding a small corner of a peeping matchstick.

Composition: The nutcracker and shells are a lovely subject, although I must admit that I am rather distracted by the "frozen" peices of shell in the air. I'm sure they are there because they just exploded from the shell, yet I cant help but feel like they detract from the image under the two peices.
Maybe a mixed background (a table top with the background suitably blurred) might have given this photo a bit more realistic life.

Lighting: The lighting in this subject is brillant, it gives the wood, nut and shell peices a wonderful colouring. I think another light source may have given a little more depth to the nutcracker, as the black background gives the appearance of being "cut out".

IMO a wonderful picture and a good show of "broken"

this shot didnt need to be isolated in black... it would have been a lot more interesting in an everyday kitchen scene or something similar.

Nice shot. Can't think of any obvious suggestions other than perhaps moving in a little closer.

Nice deep color. Like the stop action of shells. Good luck.
