this is a long legged fly .. the aren't much bigger than a mosquito ..
there used to be lots around .. but i've only seen one in the last two years .. and i've been looking for them as they are my second favourite insect to photograph .. as they are so beautiful .. the first being the robberfly ..
this was the one i saw .. :)

after voting ..
thankyou for the beautiful comments and the ribbon .. much appreciated .. xx ..

Willem i was asked a similar question for another insect shot which i entered in 52Frames which is another photography site I am in ..

this was my answer ..
i do move very slowly when i get near them .. and I'm very close .. the end of the lens is usually only 5" to 8" away from the insect ..

i change my camera settings and the direction the flash is pointing to what i think they should be judging by the light etc before i get to them so i'm not fiddling around or moving too much when i'm near them ..

what i've found is that if your shadow passes over them they will fly away but the flash usually doesnt bother them .. depending on the species of course ..

time of day also plays a part .. they are usually less active in the early morning .. but that's a generalisation ..

but a huge factor of why they stay still is that i ask very nicely .. lol .. !! ..

i also say thankyou after i've got the shots ... and I'm not joking ..

maybe they tell other insects that i'm not a threat .. and that they will be immortalised forever .. that could be the major reason they stay still ..!!.. ;)
although most of them don't care about all that and fly away anyway ..

Congratulations on the red ribbon. Everything is in perfect harmony in your composition in terms of colors. The details on the main subject are superbly done. These are the characteristics that make us admire your composition. Well done !

Beautiful surreal colors against a bold green background. Beautiful work! The beauty here is in all the viewers eyes.

Love the curve of the leaf. And the detail on the fly, of course.

I just marvel at the design and shimmering look of this creature and what it takes to take a picture of it

Roz, you should give a Master Class on your insect photography. I would be the first one to sign up!

As always, wow. What amazes me the most is how you they sit still while you are trying the capture the image and you manage to get the perfect focus.
