Challenge: Despair (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S100
Location: Houston, TX
Date: Feb 22, 2003
Aperture: 7.1
ISO: default
Shutter: 1/350
Date Uploaded: Feb 23, 2003

I used a Canon AW-PS200 underwater housing to get this picture. The water was freezing cold so I was only able to get 2 shots before my body was completely numb. I had hoped this shot would come out better but wasn’t about to jump back in for retakes! I played around with the brightness and levels in PS to give it some more grain in an attempt to make the picture more dramatic and converted to B&W using PS.

I almost submitted a similar photo. Nice job. I like that the shadow is on this side of the hand. I would have liked to see it in color as well. 7

This one really caught my eye. I like the textures and contrast.

um wow... I might be the only one that sees the art in this (grainyness, framing, black and white) but my opinion should be held as very vaild in the "real" artistic community.... AMAZING JOB... 10

I guess it isn't winter there right? So you must be in the southern hemisphere! Great photo you took, the composition is spot on, and the challenge you met as well. I love the texture of the water.

Excellent representation of 'despair' in this shot... I love the sharp contrast and the grain on this image... a definite 10 in my book :) - setzler

Although it seems a little grainy, that adds to the atmosphere and to the feeling of despair which you've captured quite nicely.

This taps into the fear of drowning many of us have...good execution...well done....

Just a little light on the palm of the hand would have given a bit more charactor.
Good topic.

The lines in the water add to the story of this photo

Nice contrast between the hand and the water.

great composition. nice use of B&W to bring out the dramatic effect of the image. Excellent tension inthe hand. I like the framing too. Lighting from the back is an excellent choice. 7

Being able to see the arm, above the elbow, spoils the impact of the image for me.

This is one of my favorites. Very simple, and yet, effective. Good choice to go b&w, I like the lighting except maybe that small dark spot in the foreground in the water.

Certainly conveys the feeling, and well at that. Nice compositions, and I like the stark contrast.

Wonderful shot! The noise really gives a strong emotional impression to me, and the starkness of the water against the black of the hand creates a lasting image in my mind. The only thing that bothers me is the arm visible underneath the water. It ruins the impression of the "last grasp" before the subject sinks beneath the waves... still 9 for a striking image.

feels like despair to me!

this is a good image, the black and white makes it more dark and dreary
