Photo was taken on Christmas morning at 5:30 a.m. CST in front of the Oyster Creek Police Department. I was at the end of my shift as a police dispatcher, went outside to shoot some pictures of the snow and saw the hydrant. I thought it would make a great shot for the challenge. The snow had just stopped falling, as one of the last snowflakes can be seen falling to the right of the fire hydrant. Myself, being a volunteer firefighter, to me the fire hydrant is one of the most important mechanical devices we have to assist us in fighting fires.

Note: This is the first time in history of weather record keeping that this area on the Texas Gulf Coast has experienced a white Christmas, and with a record amount of snow totaling 13 inches that fell within 8 hours. The most this area has ever received on any given day. What a beautiful Christmas present.

Only minor cropping and exposure changes were performed. Shot with a HP PhotoSmart 315 "point and shoot". By the way, this is my first time to submit a photo. I hope it is liked!

I would have taken this shot without a flash, it doesn't flatter the subject. There's also a distracting white spec to the right of the fire hydrant. Good attempt, but try without the flash.

Not really on theme. Poor lighting. On camera flash does not look good in snow.

lighting should be a bit more on your main subject == snowy bush gets more of my attention, specks of light detract and shoudl be, in my humble opinion, cloned out

I am trying to stop using the word "nice" so much in comments and you are making it difficult. I really like the texture of the snow. I get a real sense of the cold air.

wow...looks just like Santa but not sure of the relevance to the challenge.

I don't like the way this is lit at all--the bright snow and hedge in the foreground really distracts me from the hydrant. Perhaps shooting from closer, and maybe a little lower, would have given it a little more impact. Also, you could try a longer exposure with no flash (on a tripod), or maybe just a little less flash.
