Greetings from the Critique Club :)
Hi Achiral...
I really love the way these chess pieces absorb the light. I have one of these sets myself and have made quite a few photos with it so far.
I understand your theme of 'despair' in this shot since the King is definitely in dire straits. Doom is imminent and the game will soon be over.
Black and white was also an excellent choice for this photograph and your exposure is pretty good. The lighting in the frosted glass pieces is just a tad hot, but otherwise great exposure.
With the theme you have chosen for your despair shot, I would have done one thing differently knowing what I know about these chess pieces. Since the theme of your shot is 'despair' and the solo King is the piece in trouble, I would have used the frosted glass King as the object piece and the clear glass pieces as the attackers in this shot. The frosted glass King would have become a much greater focal point as it absorbs and distributes the light much better than the clear glass pieces. The secondary clear glass pieces would have become less of a focal point and really done a nice job of accenting your King in despair :)
Keep up the good work :)

I like the concept, and technically it's well done, however, it doesn't touch me emotionally, so doesn't effectively evoke despair. |

Cool image, I love the way you set the lighting to get those pieces glowing like that. The lightness is high but not enough to blow out those pieces. The contast of light to dark is amazing. |

ok I have to know how you did the trick with the lights inside the pieces. please help.... the shot itself is a little soft on focus and despair,. maybe a tripod would help the focus??? otherwise, great compositionand shot!! I like it! |

Nice. Would have been better if it was a check-mate situation.

excelent lighting, nice and cold. Perhaps fewer peices - seems a little to crowded. |

This could never happen in chess! |

As an image, I love this... But the chess player in me was screaming about how it is impossible (without having a pawn promoted to bishop for the second bishop on the black diag, and even then to be checked by that many pieces at once is an impossibility) I'm telling the chess player in me to shut up and let me just enjoy the shot. Good work! |

Not exactly a probable chess game, but a nice picture. |

the lower right rook is the on in dispair, he can't get the king. |

Technically this is a nice photo. The lighting is nice, thought there are two bright spots on the king. I think I would have been more impressed with a mate-in-one setup rather than such a contrived setup (i.e. never would occur in a game). Maybe that's just me? |

There isn't enough contrast between the "white" and "black" pieces |
