My grandfather passed away the week of Christmas. We all gathered at my Grandmother's Church after the funeral. This photo was of my grandfather's brother. I didn't even know he had a brother until that week.

I used Dave's Midnight Sepia filter on the entire shot. I did a little touch up cloning out the paper towel rack on the back wall by his head. I also cloned out his wife's arm next to his right arm. I cropped the photo in tight.

Great character study with colors that are pleasing to watch. Bumping up.

Crop out the distracting background... the haze effect is gimmicky, looks very Photoshop

Good facial expression. Good capture. One of my favorites of the challenge.

I like the capture but not the loss of detail in the shadows of the black coat. There should be a collar in there somewhere I think. On the other end of the spectrum, the shirt seems overexposed. In this case, the photoshop SHadow/Highlight tool would help to brind some detail back into the whole. A slight counterclockwise rotation to level off the pitcher/sill and railing and the image would shine. Bumping from 4 to 5.

Nice picture of an old fella. Can't make up my mind if he's looking at you (not a candid) or just to your right (a candid). The soft focus is a nice touch. Good lighting too although almost blown out on the front of his shirt.

I'm trying to work out if the photo is slightly out of focus or if it is just me. And then I wonder if it is meant to be that way to add to the ambience. I've gone with ambience and I must say I do like it.

I really like the shot. I think that the colors are a bit off. I think that it would have made an awesome b&w. 8

Quite a shot, but I hate the window/hat conflict and the extreme post-processing takes it out of the reality zone where i personally expect to find a "candid" in residence.

Very nice soft focus effect. How did you achieve this? Please tell us after the challenge! Great tonality too. Gives it a more old timey feel which fits in well with the subject. Your title leads one to believe this is a sad time, but the feel of the shot doesn't show it. Makes me wonder about the cultures involved...

Work on holding that camera still. Other than that though, nice composition.
