I think people somewhat over-react to frames ... I think when most people say they "don't like the border," what they may really mean is that they want to choose their own ... almost no-one would take your cropped photo and mount it in a "floating" frame -- they'd want to choose their own mat/frame combination.
It may not be "smart" voting-wise to use them on challenge entries, but I don't think that should dissuade you from a degree of experimentation. |

Thanks for all the great comments everyone, I was happy to see I placed well. I don't think I should have used the frame. That was a bad idea. I was thinking about making it a print. I would remove the frame first. I had an 8x12 printed out yesterday w/o the frame and it is excellent.
Thanks again,
Travis |

One of the most interesting and mood setting images of this challenge.
Congratulations on your 9th finish. |

Congrats on your top 10 placing Travis with this very nice photo.
The first thing that strikes me with this photo is the frame. Some people may like it but I really don't and think it detracts a LOT from the photo. I gave this photo an 8 in the challenge but it would be a 10 without the frame, as it is part of the presentation and should be judged as part of the photo in my opinion. Not only the frame, but the bevel on the actual photo makes it look quite 'tacky' in my eyes. As far as the other post processing goes, I think it is very well done, with nice sharpness, and the contrast not to strong, as to give a misty early morning feel. I think the crop may be a bit too narrow. It makes the photo look quite small and I would love to see more detail at the top of the frame, and perhaps a little less at the very left. This would improve the detail you'd be able to show.
All in all a very good photo fully deserving it's top 10 placing.

Very nice. If mine, I would have it hanging on the wall. I'm surprised that you didn't get any ones because of the frame. That says a lot for your capture. Great job! |

Personally I'd prefer they were riding into the frame, but it's a lovely shot anyway. |

I really like the lighting and soft look in this photo.
At first I thought it would look better if the horses were on the left side giving them room in the direction they were moving.
But after looking at it a bit longer I think it's best just the way you have it.
Very nice, it's getting a 9 from me. |

Beautiful! Looks like a painting, so the frame/border works well. Eastern Texas? (Just guessing). (8) |

Big risk with the frame, but I like it. Can envision this on the wall. Nice job. Did you use a gradient filter to darken the left third of this image - just curious. |

Great picture, but do get rid of horrible the border ;-)
Well, actually it's funny. But I don't think you ment this picture to be funny, did you?
Despite the border, I still think this is one of the top 10 of this challenge! 9 |

Nice shot Travis. I like the balance of the image. The soft grass pulls you into the image. Good luck and HNY. |

Beautiful picture and great resolution. Some will like the frame others will not. I don't mark you down for it. |

Hmmm, I really don't know what to do with this one, so I'll give you a stream of conscious monologue while I consider it. My first thought was that the border is awful. and no further consideration will change that. I tend not to subtract marks for dreadful borders (this one just appears cheesy) so we'll just move on to the image. The composition here is great, the setting is beautiful and I love the misty feel. Overall you have created a beautiful mood with this shot. So congratulations on that level. Now the difficulty arises here in respect of the challenge. Sure, to spend more time with family is an admirable resolution, but Im not sure that this image evokes that for me. This does a wonderful job of conveying the peacefulness of the early morning ride, but I just don't feel that this conveys an individual's resolve to spend more time with their family. This is far too good an image to hammer with a low score, but I can't go higher than five here.
Anyway, to end this on a good note, this is a beautiful image, one you should be proud of. Best of luck with this challenge and future ones. |

Interesting post processing. This almost looks like a photo of a photo. Great composition. Don't care much for the gray/blue haze over the image but it does add that "wow" factor. |
