76th place is inexplicable to me, James. I rated this photograph higher than 74 of the 75 above it. It may not be a visually stunning image, but it is everything a candid portrait should be. Perhaps you should have included a kid or a cute animal perched on Tom's shoulder, and to hell with the challenge subject! Cheers, Paul. |

Simple candid portrait. Clean shot; unguarded (i.e. candid) expression, and best of all a reason for it. 9. (P.S. Anyone remember Rod Steiger?) |

It's a marvelous facial expression. I'd have scored this higher if it had a fuller tonal range and were not so static in composition. |

Tom looks befuddled. The combination of the white wall and shading of the blinds creates a perfect background for this shot. There is a very wide range of midtone shading and the whole appears in perfect focus. Careful attention to detail has ensured that no reflections in the lens or glasses cause any distraction. It is a strong image that would improve slightly by moving the subject off center slightly or even at an angle to add a variety of interest to the shot. This could easily have been staged, but appears relaxed enough to consider candid. Bumping to 8. |
