sigma 105mm EX DG macro lense - tripod - custom white balance - slightly cropped.

i have been thinking alot about optical illusions. and they have been the focus of my photos lately. since the deja vue challenge recently, but they always have intrigued me. this is a pretty common one in drawings, but i have never seen it photographed. in reality the upper beam would have to be a 45deg angle to cap both the verticle supports.

i thought this idea might work well for the acrhitecture challenge seeing as it is imposible for any builder to actually build this. despite it being a pretty high quality image - i think it may take a beating by the speed voters. i added the pigs simply for visual interest, although one of them does point your eye to the key point of the illusion ;}

i'll let you know how it was done via PM if you are interested, but don't want to spoil it for those who'd like to figure it out themselves.

rotated and cropped slightly - selected white base, and whitened - added border - resized - USM - save as for web.

point of view is the key.

halogen work lights for light - one set to right other to left - pointing downward. background is the room...

The crop is quite tight with part of the subject nearly touching the bottom edge. The stark contrast between white and black via fore- and background is squelching the impact the subject 'could' have. The addition of the three little pigs (plastic ones, oh my!), however, is not entirely trivial, IMO.

It 'does' effectively add interest and, fittingly, humour to an otherwise purely conceptual reality. Without them, the illusion may require a moment or two of study from viewers not accustomed to it, who may not be willing to invest the time to do so.

I think this entry is placed well in an architecture challenge and should, IMO, have fared better than it did.

The MC Esher effect is very cool. I think the image could be lit better though...you need to emphasize the sideways pig and bring out the colors of both the pigs and the wood.

Very creative, I wonder how many will really "see" this.
