I worked on some images that concentrated on a new technique, but I wasn't super happy with any of them. I decided to try an 'Emotive' shot, which is not something I normally do. I have a feeling this will not score well. My last two challenge submissions were portraits, and they have not done too well in the scoring. That's OK, though.
Doing something emotive is not very easy, come to find out. I saw lots of media on the troops, as well as the underwater collision of the USS San Francisco. Having spent twelve years on submarines, I decided to do a shot showing respect for the crew of the San Francisco, as well as the troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.
By the way, the flag in the background was flown on the US Capitol and was presented to me by Congressman Joel Hefley!
I used one Alien Bees 800 to the front left with a white foam board to my right for a little fill. I took the softbox off to give a harder light. I wanted this shot to be real, and a little raw. I used a second AB 800 behind me to light the flag. |

i think this result, sad to say, is politically motivated. There are dozens of other shots that didn't really apply any innovative style to their photo but yours far and away got voted down with 1's. |

It didn't meet the challenge so I only gave you a 9. My brother is over in Iraq. The 135,000 troops and their families appreciate your prayers. What a wonderful photograph! Thank you! |

Very moving. I bet the troops in harm's way would appreciate this one. You might want to see if you can pass this on to the military. Good job |

How does this break new ground? Good close up portrait, but I will not score this high. |

Technically an excellent shot, but I am not seeing readily apparent 'groundbreaking' technique here. I might be mistaken but this, therefore, does not meet the challenge. Would score very well in a different challenge, but it doesn't work here. |

Firstly, this is a very clear and sharp image that is well balanced. Good use of light and the tones are nice. I feel that the social commentary has thrown me off as a bit "in your face". You have mixed praying and patriotism well but lack to show me how this is innovative. Good luck. |
