These are two "poles" located near the Stanford Law School in California. The carved face in the foreground is part of a totem pole created by Don Yeomans in 2002, entitled "The Stanford Legacy." It tells the story of the Stanford family. The pole in the background was created by James Rosati in 1984 and is entitled "Column I." Ironically, the pole that looks more traditional is actually newer.

I had some trouble getting this shot, and am not all that happy with the results. (It looked better in my mind than it does on the screen.) I had a difficult time setting up the shot so that both poles would fit without one dominating too much. Also, at this time of day, the sky was gray and there was not much light. I returned half an hour later when the sun came out and the sky turned blue, but then the face of the totem pole was in shadows while the metal column was too shiny--the contrast was too great.

I've cropped the image a bit, and touched up the hue/saturation and levels slightly.

Great viewpoint and composition. :-) You didn't have luck with the weather, though. The photo is a bit greyish, maybe a bit contrast and saturation would help, I am not sure.

I really like this idea. I would have liked to see more of the foreground totempole at an angle where the tree is blocked out looking towards the newer pole, without as much depth of field...perhaps too much in the way of art for this site...anyway nice concept.

I fear there may be a little less meaning in the new than what was carried in the old... Nice comparison. Clever choice!

interesting find, but compositionally not very appealing. Maybe a better lighting could help
