When I saw this road sign in front of the fence, it reminded me to the following joke:
- What was this crash, Jean?
- A car has turned into a side street, sir.
- And why the crash?
- Because there was no side street, sir.
I have taken this photo a quarter mile far from my house. Vandalism has reached small towns as well... :-( This road sign was twisted away from it's right direction. --- It wasn't me! :-)))
I used: crop, resize, very little levels, brightness/contrast (added both), colour balance (highlights and shadows, reds to cyan), saturation of reds, desaturation of all other colour channels, selective colours (for reds and whites), USM.
It was a great challenge how to get rid of redish tones of the trees and the building WITHOUT breaking the rules. The secret was playing with colour balance BEFORE desaturating the other colour channels. I had luck because I mostly had to get rid of reds in highlights and shadow and didn't influence the midtoned road sign that much. After that it was easy to desaturate the this way cyan toned building and trees without partial selection. You can see some reds remained on the bottom of the fence (dry grass).
No matter what place I reach in this challenge, the most important is that this challenge taught me something new I found out. I love these challenges, because they make me think and find out techniques on my own.
Here you can find the ADVANCED EDITED VERSION of this photo. I liked that much better, but rules are rules. :-) |

No, vanalism is truly not exciting composition, it's sad. This is a no-drive-in road sing squeezed to a different direction. Would you drive through the fence, if the sign was not there? :-)
This is not my final idea, but as I had to keep the rules, I had to stop at his stage. In the description there you can find the advanced edited version of this, which is rather a mood photo than a still life. |

selective desaturation is used a lot in this challenge. funny scene but not very special. |

Inventive desaturation, but the fence and the shed kill the mood somewhat. |

Nice selective desaturation but the contrast on the B&W is a little to harsh. Perhaps it is the snow. I also find the the image has a lot of noise in it. Great positioning on the sign tho. Good luck in this challenge. |
