To me, the sky is too bright and the mosque does not appear to be clear enough. |

Ordinarily I dislike this kind of photo. The haze seems too strong and the water's highlights blown. The structure at the bottom of the ramp is ugly and disturbing and hard to make out. Everything seems cluttered and confusing. Yet somehow it works. What I mean is, ordinarily I'd rate a photo like this about a 3. But I like the rhythm of the lamp posts, the rhythmo fo the guardrail posts, the rhythm of the bumpers on the pier, and the rhythm of the windows in the mosque. There is even a kind of uneven rhythm in the pedestrian traffic. And the double meaning - which would normally force a photo with this many elements to be too cluttered - really works. It reminds us somehow of the gap between the modern secular world and the medieval religious one. This very gap and an attempt to bridge the gap is embodied in the bridge itself. It is of modern concrete and steel construction, but the guardrail has a beautiful byzantine design. And the haziness appropriately obscures our view of heaven.. The photo's concept is extraordinarily strong. |
