Greetings from the Critique Club
By Inspzil

Composition - Love your subject!! That has some great qualities that make it quite photogenic, most noticeably the great texture on the meat-striking part of it. The colors are also very cool. The contrast of the wood and metal is good. It makes me really think of this kitchen tool as a weapon with that cold metallic color against the warmth of the wood underneath.

Technical - I like the shallow DOF used in this picture, but not necessarily the angle from which it was taken. I don't think it matters if any other part of the instrument is blurry. That's fine but I feel that the entire face of the tenderizer should be focused and maybe even a little of the wood right under it. I think this could be achieved from a little lower angle without losing too much of the original composition qualities, making sure that there is no other background to come into view beyond the wood countertop or cutting board. The part that is focused looks really good. Exposure is excellent.

Overall - Almost a really good shot. I think you lost a lot of people with the ultrashallow DOF where if you could've just kept the mallet face focused, you'd have lost only a few of them who think that every aspect of every picture is totally meant to be in focus. I think you could've added another .5 to your score by simply doing that. But that's only one man's opinion... GOod luck in your future challenges - Bob

Good perspective and composition, as well as texture.

Good subject. Lighting and texture in the tenderizer are good. The background in stark white or black would have been stronger. Closer imaging on the spikes is storner.

This has the potential to be an awesome photo - the light glare is distrating and it has a snapshot feel to it - I know this could be great with some very minor cleaning up. Your angle is very fun, and your title is clever.

I don't like the light shining off your meat tenderizer at the top, it's very distracting.
The focus on the spiky part of the tenderizer is nice and sharp but you lose focus on the wood grain of the table top and the rest of the tenderizer.
The lighting seems very bright, causing shadows which may be unnecessary.
It's a great idea to use this kitchen utensil, and you do meet the Challenge.

Nice picture - I would have tried to grab some more of the wood grain
