I was going to originally go with an oreo cookie being taken apart and had already done some test shots earlier in the week, but, since it was a nice (but cloudy) day on Saturday, I decided to take my camera down to the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago after catching the matinee of "Born into Brothels" (an excellent documentary that I highly recommend - especially to photographers).
I had taken some nice close-ups of seals, lions, a snow leopard and a mountian lion when I decided to stroll over to the ape house. It suddenly dawned on me that, according to the theory of evolution, there was a split (separation) between the ancestors of modern humans and the ancestors of modern chimpanzees of around several million years ago. (Note: Around 5 million according to talkorigin.org)
I took a number of pictures of people looking at the chimps and the other species of apes in the zoo, but I wasn't happy with the glare off the glass separating the people and the chimps, nor did I like my pictures with the backs of people's heads in silhouette. I decided to put the camera right up against the glass and take pictures of the chimps directly and the expression that I submitted was my favorite.
... until I went back on Sunday and spent two hours trying to get a better shot. I was trying to do it without a flash so that I could keep what natural lighting that was there. It was difficult to say the least. A wide open apeture with a slow shooting speed turned out to be necessary, so the chimps head is little blurred from motion. I have non-blurred pictures to turn out, but none where the chip was addressing the camera.
... Then I change my submission a third time as although I really liked my second submission I don't think it met the theme in an obvious way and decide to stick closer to the challenge theme.
... Oh yeah, I also discovered animals won't do what you want them to do until they're out of focus. |
