It's quite common for my favorite to win to come up short, and a photo that makes me think "it's 'OKAY' but not ribbon worthy" to win.

Them's the breaks... congrats on the red.
03/07/2005 12:01:33 PM
Such a great photo. Simple and to the point.
03/07/2005 12:54:49 AM
One of my favorites for top honors. This is not only a striking image but as they use to say, "real cool, man. Congratulations on yout red.

Pat yourself on the back for taking a kick-butt shot that was hailed as superb by many, and, please, quit whining.

Quit whining? Or quit having an opinion? And as far as "familiar technique" that's quite an understatement.

you took great shot! and you got second place! Congrats!
I have to take my hat off to you..

but on the other hand...
... you are bloody right, you sound like a sore loser...like an old whinger...

03/02/2005 10:28:50 PM
Thanks to all who voted for me. I'm slightly discouraged that the old "shoot any object behind a plate of glass with water drops" routine hasn't got old for more people. Sorry to sound like a sore loser. I'm still grateful for my first ribbon.

I had a few people ask about the setup. It's on a large cyc wall, about 25ft wide, 20ft deep, 25ft high. (one of many benefits of working for a commercial photographer) Key light to left of model was a Profoto strobe in a 6ft octa softbox. Background was two more strobes with umbrillas.

Congratulations on your Red Ribbon! One of my favorites this challenge...Excellent work right on the challenge!
03/02/2005 05:10:41 PM

03/02/2005 12:43:18 AM

Congrats Justin, my favorite of the challenge. I gave it a 10, it really caught my attention when I browsed through them. Unfortunately it was the only one I voted on, never got around to going back. :-) Glad to see you in the top 3!

Oops!! Sorry it was a 9 ... but it should've been a 10 ;-)

Got robbed by an image that was far more suited to be in a 60's challenge.

THIS.. this is ultimate 70s. good job.
03/02/2005 12:01:44 AM
Gotta love those colors. Great photo.
03/02/2005 12:01:14 AM

Returning for comment. Ultra cool, Bell bottoms and all.
03/01/2005 10:03:56 AM
a little sterile and commercial for my tastes.
03/01/2005 08:35:12 AM
I give my 10 to this picture, but would be more for the presentation/quality of the picture, and not so much for the 70´s idea.. I dont know maybe that sofa was typical in the 70´s (in USA?). the only thing I see more 70´s is the shirt, how it is open and how it is stretching in the belly :P
The pants should be more with the bell factor (not sure what termin you use in english, but... those more wide and pointy at the feet)

Anyways... 10 ;)
02/28/2005 01:03:00 AM
very clean very cool. good colors. Maybe wouldn't have had he subject look at the camera. Makes it a little too personal perhaps.
02/27/2005 10:45:01 PM
I love the simple approach... my fav so far and I almost done, 10
02/27/2005 10:43:52 PM
The boots, the bell bottoms, the fabrics/colors and the attitude are all exquisitely 70's. Nicely done.
02/27/2005 05:52:46 PM
This really says 1970's to me. I like the minimalist backdrop and set. I wish the model had a pair of platform shoes!
02/27/2005 04:28:46 PM
By far, the best shot of the challenge. 10
02/27/2005 04:23:50 PM
Cool, man...
02/27/2005 01:48:43 PM
Groovy Man
02/27/2005 01:04:53 PM
Excellent lighting! Great costume too.
02/27/2005 10:18:53 AM
Cool. 9
02/26/2005 05:47:45 PM
Would look better with a colorful background.
02/26/2005 03:22:48 PM
Excellent compositoin. Love the line the guy makes. Also like the contrast between the subject and the background. The simplicity works.
02/26/2005 02:16:37 PM
Great photo, really get the feel of the kicked back 70's
02/26/2005 12:54:18 PM
Finally, an original shot. I was getting a little sick of all the pictures of records and lava lamps. Very nice pic. I like the composition (with the guy left of center).
02/26/2005 12:47:14 PM
Great job.
02/26/2005 07:35:33 AM
shagadelic man!!

nice shot, ads :o)
02/26/2005 01:33:39 AM
Stunning. I love the texture and color of the couch. The complimenting colors of the model's clothing is so warm. I also like the simplicity of the composition and neutral background in contrast to the subject.

The only thing I can be picky with is the lower right floor shadow...still gets a 10 though.
02/25/2005 09:20:25 PM
I must say this is a very nice shot 10
02/25/2005 10:41:24 AM
Great shot
Good luck
02/25/2005 07:34:16 AM
For some reason, I think this would have been much better on a black background. But that's just me. Nice detail, and lighting. <7>
02/25/2005 03:24:20 AM
This is by far my favorite shot in this challenge. You captured the 70's perfectly and also managed to take a photo that's just outstanding in every way. Really great job!
02/25/2005 02:20:03 AM
Love it.
02/24/2005 08:37:46 PM
Perfection. I hope this ribbons! 10
02/24/2005 08:11:52 PM
Perfect 70s look and attitude. My favorite of the challenge. Great lighting and colors, too.
02/24/2005 07:10:05 PM
great shot, it has a very 70's feel, yet isn't just about being from the 70's. My top pick for this challenge!
02/24/2005 06:26:42 PM
ahhh I love it! Nice composition (and model) and pretty good light. Diggin' it bro.8
02/24/2005 06:13:02 PM
The First Picture i've seen worth more then a 5
02/24/2005 02:18:44 PM
Now that says 70's
02/24/2005 12:47:11 PM
Great lighting and great pose!
02/24/2005 12:00:13 PM
Is that Lenny Kravits? (don't know how to spell his name). Plush was very much 70's, you just need a green or orange shag carpet on the floor and you got it. Good luck
02/24/2005 09:27:25 AM
i call winner
02/24/2005 09:14:29 AM
add a shag rug, and ya captured it all. Nice shot.
02/24/2005 08:39:11 AM
Droll. And highly evocative. Great job.
02/24/2005 08:12:24 AM
Woo... that rock and roll... :)
02/24/2005 03:08:34 AM
this is very cool man :o)
02/23/2005 11:20:34 PM
great construction of a shot.
02/23/2005 10:09:15 PM
I just know this is going to get the blue... Great work separating the background from the main character. Strong composition, but kinda gives the illusion of the horison not being straight.
02/23/2005 08:59:22 PM
02/23/2005 07:59:37 PM
I give it a 50
02/23/2005 07:13:11 PM
Just perfect! 10
02/23/2005 04:56:12 PM
awesome picture, the skin tone is great and the couch really adds character
02/23/2005 04:54:57 PM
Yes, 70's feeling here.
02/23/2005 04:42:05 PM
Terrific! blend of colors and attitude of model, against a dated sofa. The solid off-white background showcases the subjects wonderfully.
02/23/2005 04:03:27 PM
Cool and very brown!
02/23/2005 03:39:11 PM
You got the picture here! I feel back in the 70's (even though I wasn't born till 1980 LoL) 9
02/23/2005 01:20:48 PM
I'll be VERY disappointed if this doesn't get a ribbon. Excellent representation of the challenge... supurbly lit, and wonderfully uncluttered. Congrats! - 10
02/23/2005 12:45:20 PM
Most excellent! My bet for the winner.
02/23/2005 12:37:49 PM
Oh my! Are you sure you shot this pic on this week? I mean, even the shoes are in the old fashion (including the coach)! 10 from me.
02/23/2005 12:08:07 PM
This is fantastic! Absolutely remember that velvet furniture, and the clothes are perfect..great shot!
02/23/2005 11:39:27 AM
Well executed.
02/23/2005 11:09:37 AM
Excellent, I expect a top three result.
02/23/2005 10:29:23 AM
This picture looks professional, like a picture you would see in a magizine. I like it because the background it just white and then there is bright couch with a guy dressed in a 70s outfit. I like this picture.
02/23/2005 09:54:56 AM
Absolutely awesome! Love the lighting, the mood, and the retro look you've scrounged up.
02/23/2005 09:27:24 AM
pretty hip
02/23/2005 08:56:07 AM
Personally, I think that's the best phot of the bunch. Well done!
02/23/2005 07:25:02 AM
