Thanks to everyone for the very positive comments.
It was really a fun shot to work on. I thought the border was helpful for the billboard feel but I guess it wasn't really necessary. As far as why I did the double exposure format, I really liked the hands on the fence and did several of just that. I wanted a shot of my son just looking up at them because I know so many of us are busy and forget the important little ones in our lives. He just wasn't up to it. He did sit by the fence though and I thought that I might be able to make it work.
Thanks again for the feedback, comments and generous scoring. |

Congratulations on a great image. This was one of my personal top three for this challenge. Competition was tough and there were a lot of excellent images in this challenge. Yours is a great one. Btw, I did not think the border do anything for the image, but it was small and unobtrusive. It works a little better without it in my opinion.

Nice effect, and a great message. Good expression on the child. I'm not sure I understand the symbolism and metaphor here of the double exposure relative to the message. Hopefully explained better in your comments when the challenge ends. Nice shot overall. |

Like this treatment and it's well composed. The gauze offers an evocative element and reminds one of being outside looking in - an effective conscience campaign. |

ok, i am voting this challenge in 2 passes. in this pass, you will get a partial comment and a score. then i will come back to comment again. if you have any problem whatsoever with this comment, pm me and let me know. otherwise, take it with a grain of salt...i'm not trying to be a know-it-all, i'm just explaining where i'm coming from in voting this challenge. and, if this comment is NOT helpful (of if you think i'm full of $#!+), don't mark it helpful.
billboards are a science unto themselves. a lot of research has gone into determining just how much information a person can digest and retain in specific time spans. they use this information to develop formulas for determining the number of words and letters to use on billboards, as well as their sizes. they also determine the size and number of visual elements to include.
the graphics/photograph on a billboard are designed to get the point across in a moment. on the road, a driver will have less time with a billboard than a voter will give your image. this is a key element in the challenge: composing a shot that will get its point across quickly and succintly. along those lines, a strong composition will probably have few details and make strong use of negative space.

excellent work! simple, succint, and a very strong message. this is one of the few challenges where you also need to look at the thumbnail to get an idea of how this would look driving by at a distance (unless you were to move your pc out into the yard and run back in forth in front of it). here, the image looks like it would work well even at 65 mph. really hope this does well for you! good luck! |

My evaluation method of this challenge is as follows:
1. Did you catch my eye while I was driving by? I think so.
2. If I didn't catch the text while I was driving, did you intrigue me enough to look for this billboard again? No words needed.
3. Did you sell your stuff to me? Hmm... yes.
4. Extra thoughts: Disturbing. A photo that doesn't leave me after driving away.
I am not sure about the high contrast of the line that crosses the kid's face. (7) |
