 Shot at home against dark blue blanket draped over sofa with lamp (shade removed) off to side at eye level.

I like the drama of low-key lighting in portraits, and I've been working on trying to improve this recently. I find it hard to get a good tonal range without blowing out the highlights or having a lot of "same shade of grey" midtones.

I did do some work with the grayscale curves in PictureWindow.

Any comments or suggestions on improving the image would be appreciated.

Focus is spot on, his eyes are very sharp. I think that you might try bumping the contrast up just a little. This is a portrait you should be proud of.
