Challenge: Ansel Adams (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Donner Pass, California, United States of America
Date: Mar 5, 2005
Aperture: 6.3
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/180
Galleries: Landscape, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Mar 6, 2005

I love this image... one of those rare photos that look good right out of the camera. No levels, no contrast, no cropping needed.

After studying Ansel's work for a little while, I knew I'd have to drive to the mountains to find a similar shot in his style. So off I went.

When I got home, I messed around with the Channel Mixer for a couple hours trying to duplicate the look of his black and whites, and found that for this image, these channel mixer settings worked the best:

Red: +128
Green: -172
Blue: +142

That is it, just channel mixer. No dodging, and very slight burning in only a few places. However the grey and black tones of all the trees and folage are NOT minipulated at all with the Burn tool! The histogram shows no pure black pixels and no pure white pixels.

Since I hate using NeatImage in most cases, I used Guassian Blur instead on the sky only, and then applied a very light USM (only .3 pixel radius on this 620px image).

Hope you like this one as much as I do!

I like this shot, but I'd like to see the sky perhaps a little darker.

Excellent details and exposure! Too bad there weren't some big poofy clouds up there. Great work.

Nice framing. Slightly washed out, though.

Great location and range of tones. I miss seeing clouds! The trees in the foreground get lost in the light sceme. Still a grand landscape photo.

I'm Hungry! Feed me. Hey, hey, pass that arm over here.

You should really have some texture in the sky to have this in true Adams' style. Good composition.
