this look like it has much sharper focus on the sides than in the middle, needs more depth of field

Too many light and shadowed areas in the background distract me from the subject.

a whiter background with more light would have reflected better colors off of or through the subject

With cut glass onwe expects a kind of crysalline sharpmess of focus which is absent here.
