18th honeymoon
by kandyj
Critique by Silver Fox
One of my favourite photographs and I got the chance to critique it! I just love the way she’s got her eyes closed!
First of all Kandice, in future I'd like to see some information on your aperture and shutter speeds, to me it’s one of the most important things to keep track of this information and to share it with us. And fill us in as to where you took the photo. Maybe we want to go there one day and cool off with our Sweet Heart! :}smiles
Okay. The Sun looks like it was directly on top of them and that makes it pretty hard to control your lighting, not much you can do about it.
The result is that you end up with the funny looking hazy/lighting behind them.
I think it looks okay, but the other problem you run into here with this photo is: see the tree branches growing out of his sweetheart’s head? That’s a “no no.”
Either move them around a bit, or move yourself around a bit to avoid this in future. Okay?
You have good composition and you have your subjects in a good pose which shows the love of 18 years between them.
Your focusing is right on with good depth of field.
Did you shoot you camera on Automatic? If on Manual, you could control the exposure yourself much better.
As I said above the visual impact of your photo showed emotion to your viewers and this is what gets you points in a Challenge.
You’ve got good ideas and imagination and all you have to do is keep shooting and keep practicing and shooting and practicing and . . .
most of all have some fun!
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ed

the lighting is kind of neat but the photo is very much a snapshot level quality (which of course with candids is hard to do) but it does detract from what you want to achieve in a submission. |

Good composition and pose. You could have stood to increase the contrast a little. You seem to have shot into the sun, so the picture has kind of a haze to it. |

This is a good capture of emotion, but the image seems to be a bit over exposed... Shooting into the sun also produces the lens flare that you see here in teh upper right.... - setzler |

Its a very nice, very touching photo. The background adds to the spark that is there between them after all those years. |

i love backlit images but you also got some glare. use a lens hood or your hand to block the sun. great composition. |

The lens flare hurts. I could be wrong, but this shot seems like it was forced into "rule of thirds" subject placement, and I'm not sure if that works out best. We don't really see enough of the waterfall to make it an interesting element in the photo, yet the couple are shoved into the corner of the shot. I think a horizontal shot of this might have been more effective, showing the couple on the right side of the frame and the background unfolding on the left side. That way you could show more of the falls and the background could be a stronger element in the shot. It is a nice candid that portrays real life emotion as opposed to staged emotion by models, which I like. Good luck to you. 5 |

I think I would have backed up to get all of the couple in the frame with more of the waterfall behind them. I have never done anything for 18 years! |
