A memento mori is a form of image that urged a European person of the late Middle Ages to "remember thy death." To do this, a memento mori might represent death as a human skeleton perhaps as the Grim Reaper gathering his harvest or it might depict human bodies in an advanced state of decay.1 Its purpose is to remind the viewer that death is an unavoidable part of life, something to be prepared for at all times. Memento mori images are graphic demonstrations of the fact that death was not only a more frequent, but a far more familiar occurrence in medieval Europe than it is today.

Levels, selective (red and magentas) hue/saturation (to get the brown water turn to blood)
Cloned out a leaf that had fallen on the grave and that I didn't see when taken this photo (I have cleaned a few other graves, but this one I had to do in Photoshop) USM size save for web.

This close up causes confusion for me as a viewer, uncertain if it is vertical or on the ground, if the blood red liquid is blood or paint or murky rainwater, though the image evokes dread and death. a reflection in the liquid perhaps would have given this more context.

Quite interesting. Looks like there is no hope of coming back. Bumping up.

Is that you in the reflection? It's a little distracting. But this is a great find, definitely different, the red implying blood works well.

Interesting tombstone. The shadow in the right eye of the skull is a bit distracting to me...but otherwise a good picture

Very gruesome... not my kind of photograph... but I like your idea and take on the composition. Great composition and tones.
