I chose this photo, not because I thought it was a winner, but because I thought it was important enough to share and I was hoping people would take a moment to learn a small piece of history from my local community. A caring man, a run-away slave, a man who touched and effected the lives of thousands of families throughout the our nation. He is the man who recorded and cataloged information about men who died in the Elmira Prison, during the civil war. Information such as Names, ranks, and homes of captured prisoners so that they could later be found and identifed by their families. The compasionate man, John Jones, kept records of and carefully buried each Confederate prisoner who died here in Elmira. His care and compasion are symbolized in this photo. The sadest part is only a fraction of the nearly 3000 graves are captured in this photo.
Slight cropping. Very little was done to edit this photo other than removing some fallen leaves which were lying in the grass, and boosting the contrast slighly. |

Nice job incorporating the story with the headstones. This is a very interesting entry - 7 |

the back of the text runs out of the focal plane, making the main focus of the composition hard to read. |

It seems like the graveyard is falling out of the picture. A bit dull? |

Interesting story - but the interest largely comes from the words, not the image as a whole. Horizon is slanting. Background is distracting (too much detail behind trees) |

I am making two passes on this Challenge. I will vote on your photo then return later(before voting is over) to comment on what I like and dislike about your shot. You can take the comments however you wish and I will try not to be mean. Just don't take it the wrong way.

This is an emotive memorial - a good find. I would have tried to level the horizon, or perhaps find an angle that eliminates the the area beyond the last row. |

Very interesting story, but I'm afraid that the photo as a photo is a bit weak in composition. |
