Challenge: Free Study VIII (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Sony DSC-V1
Location: Newyork, NY
Date: Apr 5, 2005
Aperture: 3.2
Shutter: 4 seconds
Galleries: Cityscape, Urban
Date Uploaded: Apr 5, 2005

This photo was taken really late at night or early in the morning! I was leaving a bar in Manhattan and I was walking to my car and noticed that only the windows on the third floor were lit. I think this would of done real well for Stock Photography. I hope it fits the theme for Free Study and this probably is my most edited photo to date. I dodged this alot although I really didnt have to, but it brought out details such as the signs and the texture of the building. I cropped it, adjusted levels, USM, and desaturated a bit.

Love the title! Boy you are out doing yourself! I love the lights and how they all are different lighted up, everything is in perfect focus that I can read the signs too...

Critique Club Comment:

First of all, I want to say that I have myself tried night photography and I am not the best at it.
It's hard to get exposure right, there are so many things to take in account when trying, it's not my favorite kind of photography to do, but the results can be great.

I have voted on all entries in the free study and voted this a 6.
I can tell you why, now that I have looked at your image longer I understand what you where trying to say, but when voting on 500+ photos people don̢۪t take the time to look really hard.

I don't know for sure if I would have voted higher if I understood it right away, maybe a point more.
The trouble with this picture is there's so much going on, the fence, the light on the fence the light in the doorway, that it is not easy to find a place of interest. And that way your message doesn̢۪t come across.
Also keep in mind that people send in their best shots (well most of the time) and there will be some great ones in every free study. Because of the high number of really great photo̢۪s the average goes down, so don̢۪t be disappointed with your score, it̢۪s tough to compete with so many great photos

I think Frisca's comment says it all, without the fence this would have been much better.

Keep up the good work.

Peter

Good night scene, shame about the fence on the right spoiling it a little.

Blown out street light is very distracting, I would have edited it out with PS

the light on the right is super distracting and takes away from the story you are trying to tell. I don't know what would have saved this shot except a lot of cloning!

I'm not sure this works so well with the lights on in the buildings in the background, but it is certainly a great idea!
