Photographer’s Notes
Here is yet another stormy sunset over the Olympic Mountains.
I live in a house that looks west 80 miles toward the Olympic Mountains in Western Washington State. There two tall peaks form a deep “V” between them that I have dubbed “The Notch.” Twice a year, on the day I’ve dubbed “Notch Day” the sun sets right in The Notch: April 6th and September 6th *. In this photo The Notch is 1/4 of the frame from the left and is partially shrouded in clouds. On the date of this photo (April 13th), the sun has moved a good bit north of The Notch at sunset.
* Actually the length of a year is 365.25 days and leap year corrects the error every 4 years. So it’s a bit more complicated to predict exactly which day in April and September is “Notch Day.” But April 6 and September 6 are the officially celebrated Notch Days in our household. The Notch Day parties are not to be missed but invitations are exclusive.

this is a beautiful image, one, though, that will probably be overlooked and under-appreciated. i really doubt if any dpc-score will do this image justice. all the same, thanks for sharing. good luck! |
