Challenge: Abandoned Buildings (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: Old Doorway

This is an old parsonage house located by Walnut Grove, MO. The date engraved in one of the stones above the door states it was established in 1895. The house is constructed of unpolished marble and limestone. This house is located by the Phoenix Quarry. In its day, Phoenix was a booming town famous for being the home of Bonnie & Clyde. I fell in love with this house as a kid and I love taking clients to this location for portraits. The owner of this building still runs the quarry and is very kind to allow my to utilize the location any time. (Many Thanks!) This location is my ace in the hole; I can always guarantee gorgeous results at this building. Depending on the season and the time of day, different windows and doors are at their best. In this picture, the ambient light coming through the door was amazing and perfect for a great picture. This is my son. I’m aware that there will be payback for this outfit in years to come, but it was so cute I couldn’t resist.

AT 400x320 pixels, this image is a bit on the small side for a challenge.
Seeing as the boy doen't look to be abandoned, I can only assume the rubble behind him is what is abandoned. Though a decent shot photographically, a viewer's eyes will be drawn to the boy rather than what the challenge was intended to be about. Had the image been taken from a bit further back and had him off to the side maybe fro perspective, this would have met the challenge better.

No a very good entry for this particular challenge. Since the challenge is supposed to be about abandoned building there is no real point to having your son in the photo. There is also no way to tell or interpret that the building is abandoned. The photo size is way to small as well and you are allowed to go up to 640 x 640 pixels. Good luck in this challenge.

not themeatic.

For DPC always try to use the full 640 pixel size. The boy is nicely posed. The exposure on him is very good. The color and detail in the shirt and pants are excellent. The stone he's resting his hand on is very bright and tends to distract my gaze from the subject.

And a very good shot of Dayton, I might add. He looks like he's a natural.

Nice shot, though the subject seems to be the child not the building..wider angle might improve, or maybe try letting the building speak up for itself.

Cute kid. I can see the building a little, but this turned out to be more of a picture of Dayton. It is a very nice picture of him though.

Why, this isn't abandoned. There is this handsome genlileman here.

Seriously, I like the colors although they seem a bit washed out.

Adorable boy, but I'd stick with challenge focus. We can only assume it's the building he's holding up that's abandoned, and not he. If you produce photographs as well as you do children, you'll do well here!

Congrat"s nice potrait of a nice looking young man, but the challenge is for abandoned buildings (not to be mean).

I like this one. This would have been a good one for the People challenge.

Nice background, cute little guy in clean stylish clothes, but doesn't quite fit the theme (IMO). Maybe an old relic of a guy would have given it a little more oomph.

Hi :-) and welcome to the challenges. A cute picture of the boy. Actually a good idea, incorporating the child with the building in the shot. It seems you have a good eye, the shot is framed well, and you've avoided any unneccessary background clutter. For me it has potential to provide an emotional, human connection to the photo. But I'm afraid for many voters it may not be obvious enough, perhaps showing a little more building would provide more context. If you for example had a composition where the boy is looking at the building, like a new generation studying the old, something along that line. Color and exposure not too bad. The boy's pose feels a little uncomfortable and forced, with him leaning so sharply. The photo seems like it could be a little sharper, either crisper focus, or using a tripod or support (if you didn't) can help. Also can be sharpened a little in post processing (photoshop or whatever program you use). Also, when submitting your photo, it's usually a good thing to use the full 640 pixel size allowed or as large as possible. Most voters want to see full size shots, and it really optimally brings out the detail and texture of a shot. There are some pretty good tutorials on these things on the site, and asking questions in the forums usually provides some great help. Anyways, again welcome and have fun :-), this is a great place to learn, and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Really nice portrait with very nice lighting. Would have been better if cropped differently so that the subject wasn't in the center.

Although the little boy is adorable, in this challenge I feel that more emphasis should be put on the abandoned building itself.

adorable child! It may have been more geared for the challenge if there were more of your abandoned building in this shot, this site is a learning experience so i hope you get alot of useful comments to help you see what most voters are looking for. technically a good effort.

Congrats on your first entry, and welcome. I hope you enjoy it here and learn a lot. As you have probably already learned, the culture around what belongs in an entry and what does not is pretty strict and I find it almost impossible to tell in advance what kinds of choices will work universally and which will fail with greater or smaller portions of the audience. In this case, photo appears to be about Dayton. The abandoned building is a minor compostional element. Some competitors would say can't do much better than a 3, but I'm not one of them.

The lighting in the photo is beautiful and the color palette looks very good to me. Composition seems a little static. Keep entering, I can tell you will be a formidable competitor; I'll have much to learn from you. Best of Luck.

Tee heee. . . .I love your disclaimer "My First Entry". . . like, "Go easy on me, it's my first time" :) I love your picture! That precious little boy really makes this one of 498 abandoned buildings stand out. I'm sure you're hearing about it being small. . .it's something that a lot of first timers do, and it's something the voters usually get pretty picky about. But I personally don't think it detracts from your picture at all. I like it. It's very sharp, and the colors of the child's clothes contrast with the picture nicely! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

This doesn't seem to be about abandoned buildings at all...is it just me? Not a bad portrait, but not a good fit for the challenge in my mind.
04/13/2005 02:10:25 PM
A nice well posed portrait. This unfortunately doesn't bring home the subject matter of "Abandoned Building", for me a key part in the judging. I do think the lighting and colors are nice.

This is a portrait of a child and not a building...I don't get the "my first entry" in the title either...are you begging for mercy perhaps? This really bothers me.
04/13/2005 10:01:49 AM
Looks like a nicely dressed, clean young man against a wall. We really aren't seeing much of an abandoned building.
04/13/2005 09:17:28 AM
A little bright (light) causing a lack of details in the texture of the building.
04/13/2005 04:34:47 AM
so sweet, good luck [read the tutorial on how to go bigger]
