i shot this in the 3rd St Diner (the best place in richmond to eat breakfast), while shooting for setz's human scavenger hunt. these three were having breakfast, and asked if i could take their picture, since i was so busy shooting everyone else. how could i say no...

this was shot with existing light with my 50mm f/1.8 lens, sitting on my 6.5" tabletop tripod.

post: minor adjustments for levels, selective color, and shadow/highlights. sized, usm, and saved for web.

--- post-challenge notes -----
thanks so much for all the comments!!! i was truly amazed at how this image connected with people.

while i did wrestle with different interpretations (ie, different crops, background treatments, etc), before submitting, i decided to submit it exactly the way i captured it. this is who they are: 3 great, wonderful, warm people who just wanted me to capture them as they were.

thanks again for all the comments!

I just stumbled across this. What a nice natural composition. I love the natural smiles on all three of their faces. Great color and light.

This one just makes me smile. Bumping up the score and hope you do well in the challenge. You know, I was going to suggest that you crop that top shelf out of the photo to concentrate more on the faces, but I odn't think it is distracting and it does provide some more context. See what you think. Nice work.

this looks so much better than the obviously staged shots, it's real people, hope it does well

That's a happy group. The glasses are a neat addition to this image. The background is a bit distracting...perhaps blur this out some? Then again, it adds context to the photo...hmmm. Anyway, it's a neat shot. Good luck.

What a terrific moment you've captured here. Fantastic shot. I'd be tempted to crop a centimetre or two off the top but besides that there is little else I can think of to improve the shot - I don't even mind the foreground clutter - it provides context for the happy faces.

Love how you didn't clone out every imperpection that your three subjects had. It keeps them feeling real and tangible. Great use of foreground and background. The pink thing in the bottom right courner is the only real distracting element. Very nice shot.

Nice shot. To much on top of the composition. I think this would have been better cropped closer to their heads.

Nice use of flash I guess to fill in shadows the faces are well lit and so is the background which is a bit cluttered but hey these are chefs in a restaurant aren't they? Like it!

What a vivid shot. Nice work. A wider aperture might have helped to separate them off the background a bit more. 7.
