Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Late Night (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
Location: On my back patio
Date: May 2, 2005
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 220
Shutter: 20 sec
Galleries: Humorous, Portraiture
Date Uploaded: May 3, 2005

The camera was set to f/5.6 for 20 seconds of exposure and left sitting on the edge of the grill pointing at the bench. After clicking the shutter open, I ran over to the pose on the left, manually fired my SB-600 flash, then repositioned on the right and fired the flash again. I tried several shots, but this one seemed to turn out the best...

I think I would have liked it more if you have covered the flash so that the camera didn't see it. Try it again with a black card or fabric or something covering it. I think that will give it an even eerier feel. Especially if you also wear black pants! But it's a cool idea none the less!

well everyone, thanks for all the useful comments. since this was done without much thought or planning, i never thought the flash would be such a distraction. (actually, i rather liked the effect of having the flash in the shot, but oh well)

next time, i'll have to put a little more time into a idea...

I would have rated this higher if you weren't holding the lightsource in your hands. Nice photo otherwise.

This would have been much more effective if you either cropped out the flashlight, or if you had placed it somewhere on the floor so it is not in the photo. I assume you've done this by yourself, otherwise you could have had someone aim the flashlight at you twice.... Still a good idea. 5.

this is tough to do technically ... i think a better background would have helped and one ghost is ghostlier than the other ... BUT! .. high marks on bold creative spirit .. keep it up.

the light he is holding ruin the image, need to come up with a way to have those out of the shot better. Great job otherwise.

interesting idea, but the mundane background kinda spoils it. Would be a lot beeter if it was indeed darkness in the back

I think these types of pictures look so cool. I've always wished I really knew how to do them.

Can I just say that I can see your flashgun? I do feel, however that the background doesn't contribute a lot.

nice technique......if "ghost" light source were out of the frame.......

Colour balance is too orange. Source of light (your flash) is a bit too obvious for me here.

Great idea. I like the effect, but I think the photo would be stonger if flash unit was not visiable.

this effect works better against a jet black background. Nice photo nonetheless. I'm betting it's a self portrait.

Nice concept. Too bad you couldn't hide the flash.

great idea, try putting flash in a ox so light works on you but does not leave the flashing showing in your hands. Good

Excellent concept and good originality. the only thing i find distracting in the shot is your flash unit. i would have taken electrical tape to mask the red light on the back and would have ecplored a way to use it around the sides of the diffuser to eliminate such a bright distraction that you are holding. overall good shot and a wonderful idea.
