I backlit with an incandescent light, and side lit with two touch lights. I placed five different colored pieces of paper on the table. I then lay a huge crystal snowflake on top of the paper, distorting the paper. Then I took a beveled plastic box and placed that on the snowflake with the gold dust in it.

I like the concept of this one. The score it got doesn't mean you shouldn't go back and play with the idea. Try using only one and two colors for backgrounds. All the colors gave it a busy feel, imo, not the layering of the crystal on the snowflake. What I like about it is the illusion that it's splashing in water. See if you can come up with a simple composition that brings out that aspect. Try different points of view. I'm thinking a little lower and angled closer to the crystal might be interesting. Try about 50 shots and if you can't come up with something more interesting, stop and move on to something else. This one also displays the centered disease.

There's so much going on in this shot, that I'm not sure what to look at.

Lots of distractions from your subject. Its a very "busy" photograph.
