Friday, May 20, 2005, was overcast and rainy but big money was at stake and many celebs were in town for saturday's Preakness. Pimlico's racing surface was generously rated sloppy on Black-Eyed Susan Day. In the feature race, the $500,000 Pimlico Special, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens rode 4 year old Kentucky-bred Grand Reward. When the D. Wayne Lucas trainee faltered in the slop and was pulled up at the top of the stretch a stoic Stevens was left with a long, gloomy walk back to the paddock. As he passed within a few yards many in the crowd let him know how disappointed they were that Grand Reward had finished last.

Gary Stevens retired in November of 2005.

this is an excellent photograph...his expression of disappointment is caught well, the mud on his clothes and goggles tells the story, as does the muddy track.
