thanks for the critique! This photo is full frame with what I shot... I realize now I should have kept the wing and abdomen in. I didn't notice it because I was so focused on getting a good shot of the head of the butterfly.

As for the lighting... this was in a butterfly garden, no choice in lighting and I did not use a flash or anything of that anture. All natural lighting in basically a greenhouse.

As for the commenter who said it was oversharpened.... I only sharpened the eye and "tongue" of the butterfly to give it a bit more pop. Everything else is unaltered.

I did a bit of saturation to make the colors pop a bit more but other than that, i did very little to this photograph, thought it was great as is for the most part.

It's hard to shoot butterflies and this trip I got very few useable shots. There were a LOT of people milling around and disturbing the butterflies which I found ANNOYING. I'll have to take another trip to Magic Wings soon and try again.

Greetings From The Critique Club!!!!

Initial Impact: WOW!! what a lot of colors!!

Meeting The Challenge: This fits the challenge Perfectly. Both the flowers and the butterfly are beautyfull and enen literal symbols of beauty.

Composition: The angle and the general composition are nice. But as a couple of the other comenter stated cropping out the end of the wings and tail were probably a bad move. I feel that with so much of the subjectin the photo it just looks incomplet with the missing parts.

Color: WOW!! now thats color!! Such bright reds, with hints of blues, yellows and greens. More than enough color to keep even the color hungy monsters like me happy. I expecialy like the way the red stripe on the wing follows and creates a continuous line with the red on the flower. Very nice.

Focus: Once again very well done. Nice crisp focus, a nice use of the shallow DOF. The image is crisp and the subject stands out well.

Lighting: This I feel is was hurt this great shot the most. The lighting on this one was way to harsh. This couses everything to look hard and overshrpened. The lighting also caused tou to loose some of the delecate details in the petals. With a softer light I imagine you would have had lots of wonderfull texture reals adding to the dpth of the photo.

Overall; This is a good image. Put the missing body parts back in addd a bit of soft warm light to richen the colors and you probably would have seen the little suckers score up in the 6's easily. Nice job keep on shooting. I look foward to seeing what you have to share with us next.

A bit too bright. Highlights on the flower are blown out.

I love the color and detail of textures. Very interesting composition as well. Only fault I can find is the cropping out of the wing and body. Still giving high mark.

This is really nice. I would like to see the brightness toned down just a bit and maybe bring out a little richness in the colors, but it's also nice just as it is. For composition, I think it would have been better with just a bit less of the left side and including the full wing - however I know it's just hard enough to get a butterfly - much less getting that perfect composition before it flies away!

In many ways beautiful but the crop of the wing on the right is not right, either I think it would be better to crop more or have the whole wing.

Would have caught my attention more if the buttefly wasn't cropped in 2 placed. Still pretty.

Great macro subject suits the challenge well, just wish his abdomen and wing were stilll in the frame, but I guess there is a good reason for that! they are not the most cooperative of creatures!
