I've been waiting for the past couple days for the sun to hit this right... I love Bluebells and the yellow flowers on the bush in the background created a great backdrop.

COMPOSITION
I think the shallow depth of field works well on this, especially since the background becomes a muted yellow. Though I understand, I think, why you framed it this way, it seems a little static to me because the flowers are in the exact middle, and there is a fair amount of space on either side of them. As a result, the eyes tend to rest on the flowers (which is fine) but then there is no where else to go (except what I assume is a white flower). Maybe a portrait framing would have helped to emphasize the flowers more without detracting from the background.

TECHNIQUE
Again, the shallow depth of field really adds to the impact of this shot. Also, I think you have done well by waiting until the sun was just how you wanted it -- it has a nice dramatic effect. The contrast of the yellow and the purplish blues is very nice. The overall quality of the picture is outstanding. Very well done.

I'm impressed with the way you wait on light. I know this shot and one other shot you took you just waited and waited, reshot and reshot. People say you can't control the sun, but in your case, you do. Congrats on the top 50 and good luck!

Thanks Journey and all the other voters!

I had a different crop of this that left out the right side of the picture, thus eliminating the distracting white flower, but it elimineated much of the yellow backgroud on that side of the picture too. Since my main desire was to show the contrast between the flower and the backdrop, I decided not to crop it.

Glad people looked past the flaws and saw what I was aiming at!

Matt, congrats on a very nice picture and score. I had given it an 8, meant to comment on it but ran out of time (my own g3 had arrived, you see :) I too like the delicacy of blue bells and you captured it well with the perfect light falling on it. Love the dof on this shot. I can't believe the colors of the 'greens' coming from my g3 and was happy to see that you have that, too!

Lighting's a little harsh for my taste, but like the focus, DOF, color...

Good lighting on this one. Background is suitable and the photo is very selectively clear and sharp. Nice work.

A little overexposed in some parts.

Your composition is a bit too centered. I would have cropped out one of the sides of this image to keep your eye from wandering to each side of the bluebells. Very nice lighting and good choice of subjects

I found it a bit distracting the greenery at the bottom being cropped or not included. Great shot though!

I love the background, might have preferred a little less light on the flowers, though to avoid that burned out area.

excellent lighting.. i think a vertical crop would possibly make the subject stronger :) - setzler

Great use of contrasting colors to make your flowers pop out. I like your use of DOF here... Unfotunately the photo looks rather centered to me... I would have made this a vertical pic... which would also have gotten rid of the distracting white (flower?) thing in the right hand corner. Watch where the lighting is falling...

Beautiful flowers, clever lighting and colour! Spoiled by the white out of focus object on the right. Crop a third of each side and you have a specatular photo!
