this photo has great composition and DOF, but your "on board" flash makes it look like a snapshot. The harsh shadows that fallon the background and the harsh lighting are an unfortunate side effects from using this flash.
I have a lot of luck with a sheet over a window with sun coming through it, or just shooitng with a big window looking out on a sunny day (no direct sun), or clouds. The key is to diffuse the direct light. I've even put a piece of vellum over my on board flash.
