Shadows/Highlights, USM. Pretty much right out of the camera this time.
These birds are in the Palo Alto Baylands Preserve in two palm trees where they nest each year. I visited twice and shot about 300 images. When I tried for this one, it was obvious; if it came out, it would be my DPC entry. It came out.

Thanks to all those who suggested a different crop. I tried a closer crop but it seemed to make these birds feel closed in, so I went with the full frame to give them room to have their little altercation.

this is a great photograph ... i find that when i look at those birds its like they've been shrunk down coz those leaf/fronds look too big in relation ... love the postures and the colours ..

excellent timing! The space in the right is empty - I would have cropped there to pull the image off center - its kind of wasted space. This would have given more room to the birds so we could see the detail. Shadowing/lighting pretty good. Birds are great to photograph because the make you work! I would have added a little saturation to the green - it would provide a little more eye catchiness (is that really a word?) Excellent stop motion. 7 - good luck in the challenge!

Great action shot! Could be a little more in focus on the left guy's face.

nice action capture. a couple of steps to the left if possible to separate them (the beak from the wing) a bit might have helped. i like how the pattern of the palm trees match their feathers, but in this case i would have rather been closer to their faces-5

Nice shot, I would've cropped the right hand side off a bit to balance it better.

Nice egret shot! The detail is a joy to look at. I wonder why you didn't crop the right side...it pulls the eye away to ill effect. Color on the palms is a bit strange, green is so hard to do well. . . . . .
