Even though we had a VERY accommodating firefly who hung around for over an hour, this was a challenging shot: how to light the subjects without overpowering the luminescence of the firefly, stationary fireflies do not flash and flashing fireflies are never stationary!

In the end, the best exposures were all handheld at a high ISO under natural lighting conditions.

Adjustments:
Curves, Hue/Saturation, Clarify, USM

How'd you get the kid to sit still for so long?!

A kid playing with a firefly brings back memories of early childhood visits to Kansas. A good darkness activity. Composition, color and exposure are fine in this image. Good solid black background.

Items that will hold back its score are that the focus is very soft and the firefly looks artificial. It might be better if the child's eyes could be seen. Many viewer's might not make the connection between firefly and darkness.

Never knew what these guys look like...pity you couldn't catch this a little darker or keep more darkened areas..

Oh who`s that incredibly sweet kid? and who`s lampyridae? anyway it`s a very nice picture, but i think it`s more the 'fault' of the kid. also, i think that the focus should have been on the little bug. :)

how is that dark?

that bug (firefly?) is very interesting, the pic is a little grainy though (unless that was purposeful?)

Charming image. My parents had to tell me this as a child too.

I'm so happy to see a firefly in the challenge! I like the composition a lot. The only suggestion I might have is that either the firefly should be softer or they child should be sharper. As it is (and don't get me wrong, I like this shot a lot!), the firefly looks artificially pronounced. Otherwise nice in every way and a hgh score from me.
