 This is actually my hand. My friend Katie and I went to a closed down prison in Fort Ord to take photos. I set the time record to shoot me behind bars, but it didnt' quite work out so I cropped this out of the photo and thought it worked. So here it is. The light is just daylight coming from a side window. The black background was created because behind my hand was just a room with no light.

Fascinating to compare this image with the conceptually similar entry called "Solitary". Yours is a technically excellent photograph; great lighting, highly proficient photographic & processing technique, and of course a powerful "symbolic" take on imprisonment (the grasping hand on the bars). I found it hard to separate these two entries, but in the end I felt the other one shaded yours by a single point due to its slightly more direct engagement with darkness. Nevertheless, this is a terrific photograph. 9.

Meets challenge perfectly, and the use of lighting and shadow is really neat. Also, the line of the hand is very well done. I liked this photo very much the first time around, and I like it even better now. Bumping. 10

This is really nice. I like the concept for the challenge, the composition, and the lighting. Perfect use of the rule of thirds. I've never been in this scenario, but I'm sure this would be touching to someone who's seen hard times like this. I would like to see this ribbon. Good job!

We share the same concet of darkness - was this shot in a jail? Or just a representative prop? I would have liked to have seen a little more detail on the front of the hand, but overall a very pleasing and emotive image.

Great lighting. Theres a little grian probably from a high ISO setting which is understandable for such a dark environment. Nice hand pose. Goodluck!

The concept of this picture is well thought out. The contrast of black in the back to the light shinning from above onto the hand is beautiful. Having the bars not perfectly centered definitely adds some dynamics to the picture. An all around great picture!
