Greetings fromt the Critique Club
Hello, Adam.

Composition
A great subject - I would have moved closer to eliminate the fence and crop a lot of the sky out. Your subjects are the cows - focus on them, get to what a cow is - maybe eating grass, maybe laying down, maybe with a baby calf nearby - what IS a cow? Just an animal near the fence?

Color
I'm not fond of this exposure. I think iso 400 is really high for a daylight shot in normal circumstances. Use the 100, run the shutter at 1/160 instead or something. I think your colors would be more saturated (you could also fix this in Photoshop/PSP).

Focus
I'd think this cam (excellent cam) can focus better than this. Did you use a tripod? It's pretty essential for the kind of shots that do well on DPC. I think the hairs on the head could be crisp, etc.

Lighting
Pretty typical daylight shot - perhaps the different iso and shutter speed would fix the slight darkness here.

Subject matter
Fits the challenge well.

Overall
Just one of those shots that may not have worked as well as you hoped - good luck next time - you have some great shots in your gallery. Keep shooting!

nice image, however i feel that there is too much space present, i may have croped out some of the sky

I probably would have cropped a bit more of the sky out and focused more on the cows to get more detail on them. :)

good title, croping would have helped, along witha fill flash maybe.

I really like the composition of this photo, however the lighting and focus could be improved, in my opinion. I can hardly see the faces of the cows. It does meet the challenge. Good luck in the contest.

You're on the right track with this. I love the way they're all looking out at me. Couple of suggestions, if I may. First of all, a little + gamma adjustment might bring out some detail in the dark areas of the cows. A little fill flash would have worked, too. Also, the composition isn't working for me. Having the horizon right in the center makes for a very static feel. You might have gotten closer and lower to the ground to give the cows a more looming look. Shooting through the fence would have rid the image of that distraction, too.

the subjects are a little underexposed, it might have helped to spot meter on the white areas on the cows' legs.

This pic just makes me want to moo right back :-) Extending the pic long like you did gives it a good effect.

Perhaps the dimensions of this shot don\'t help it - I\'m not keen on shots which are far wider than they are tall or vice versa. Could have maybe lost an inch or two at the top.

A very good shot though - and from someone who actually appears to have taken time out to go out there to shoot their pic - rare by this week\'s standards.

I don't like the crop on this image at all, does not seem to fit the subject. I think it could have been improved with some more light as well, but I do like the fact that the cows all seem to be avidly watching you.

Nice! The length of the composition is great. If only you;d had a bit of sunlight on the cows, and I'd have liked to see that front hoof.

Not sure why you chose to include so much of the sky in half of the photo. It appeaers that because of that the main focus of your photo was underexposed. I think a landscape format would have been better.

Looks like Holland, or England, or new Zealand ... you get my point. fairly interesting shot - the cows lack definition (no eyes visible, for example), and whilst I like the vvertical cropping, it feels a bit arbitrary.

It appears that you're shooting over the cows heads on this one. Shooting from the hip or lower might give a better perspective as well as shooting horizontal rather than vertical.

I think you could have croped a little more sky off of it..
