Thanks to everyone who took the time to leave a comment!

I'm very pleased with how the shot turned out, this is my best finish in a Challenge to date. The shot itself was a (hopefully not) "Once in a Lifetime" capture for me, and I'm just glad I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

For those who were wondering where the "Darkness" element was in the shot, If you've ever been alone in the wilderness under a moonless night sky, with a lantern as your only source of light. You'll know exactly the feeling invoked by a gradually dimming, and ultimately "Dark Lantern". When the only sense of your surroundings is revealed to you in momentary flashes by the approaching storm.

That is what "Darkness" means to me.

Thanks again for all the kind words!

An excellent lightning bolt capture. The clarity is outstanding. You can take pictures all night and not get one that nice. The bolt itself provides wonderful lighting for the scene.

Just a couple of small items. The bird feeder or whatever that is competes with the bolt for attention and is a little distracting in the image. It appears to have a little electronic noise you may want to remove if you make a print of this shot.

It could be that the pole supporting the object is just a little crooked itself but you might want to check your horizon and rotate it ever so slightly counterclockwise if that is needed.

Congratulations on a great capture!

A brilliant lightning shot (excuse the pun). I've never tried to take such a shot, but this looks about as good as it gets. Doesn't say much to me about darkness in the emotional sense, but it's nevertheless a very fine photograph. 8

Very striking capture. Darkness means this?

I know how hard these can be to get! But, I would have looked for a slightly different vantage point. The foreground isn't all that appealing (and believe me I have ruined a few similar shots the same way!). Anyway I love lightning pictures!

Whoo! Nicely captured, great bolts! The table in the bottom left is slightly distracting, though. 8

fantastic shot of light(ening) The darkness is in the storm perhaps? Personally i would have cropped out the traintracks(?) in the bottom left corner. I find them a smidge distracting from the subject. A little more to the left would have been nice - but youre a human not a great lightening predictor, so it isnt a fault at your end.

Not only great lightning, but great composition with the lantern as well. How clever of you to position the lightning exactly there!

great shot. I probably would pay attention to the lantern without the title, but now when i see it, it definitely adds to the appeal of the image.

Gorgeous. Great capture! The only problem I have is with the lantern(?) stand - I find it a little distracting, but I don't know if there's any way you could have taken it out. Still a beautiful shot. 8.

great shot! if the dark lantern is actually the subject, you should've lowered the POV in order to frame it in the night sky. that way it wouldn't look like a distraction.

too bad u could not spot edit out the bird feeder. IMO I would have cropped more off the bottom up to the bottom of the feeder as the table and the rest is distracting.
EXCELLENT capture of lightning!
