 A stem of a lisianthus with buds leading...well pointing to the subject calla...liked the lighting in this but hmmm, well...outside the box?
Post: Open, rotate, layer adjustments for levels (50% opacity), brightness/contrast and hue/saturation. USM. Crop. Resize. USM.

07/04/2005: I want to thank everyone for the really great comments on this and, while it did not finish real high it was quite a respectable showing. On a brighter note, I got more 10's for this than for any other image I've entered so far...big thanks for that.

The lighting setup: Two 100w halogen bulbs in clamp lamps on either side of the shooting area. They were pointed up to a piece of white foam board over the shooting area. A third lamp, a desk lamp, with a 60w Reveal bulb was pointed down on the subjects from the right.

Beautiful composition! The buds are pointing right at the flower but it is the lighting that makes this special.. downward light against the black background is just perfect...there is a lot of movement created here...

The sinuous lines beckon the eye to follow them. And they all lead to the center of interest, which is also the brightest element in the photo. Very nice. It would be even better if the flower was more sharply focused.

This is one of the most striking and subtle uses of lighting I have come across and I love the way the merest touch of light along the stems creates strong lines that curve and then point at the flower itself. Just magical! 10

The lighting is just about perfect and the composition is fantastic. At first, I have to admit, I didn't see the leading lines, but I think that the way that the stalks are pointing at the flower is really effective.
