Photographer’s Comments
This is a photo of my 40 year old Smith Corona electric typewriter. It’s sitting on the floor of my den with my camera perched over it on a tripod. It’s lit with natural light on a cloudy PNW summer day. I am growing to like very long exposures with a stopped down lens and natural light.
I have written countless term papers on this machine in high school and throughout college. I have typed resumes and uncountable cover letters on it. All were well before word processing. It’s been a reliable and steadfast friend and help mate. I feel guilty and ashamed; I put it aside years ago and I don’t even know if it still works.
I have now shot 3 different ideas for the challenge; all very different. In the financial securities business they say, “Don’t fall in love with a stock; it will break your heart.” I think something similar may be true in photography. Don’t fall in love with a photo; it will break your heart. I am prepared to believe all 3 photos would do well here but I have chosen this one. Maybe you’ll like it.
Note to voters; please don’t break my heart.

Post Processing
I actually did very little with this image. The original photo was sharp with good tonal range and contrast. Basic editing was perfectly fine. My entire editing strategy was to find the part of the image that was most interesting. After that, my post processing steps were:
Crop
Sharpen (Lab color method)
Resize Image (Bicubic sharper)
Re-Crop slightly
Save for web
Note I did not desaturate the image. There are subtle colors present I didn’t want to lose.

Nice composition and interesting subject. Light is a bit bright (details are burned out) on some keys. Wish everything was sharp - or you'd chosen a differnet angle and a narrow DOF and purposely had a progression of focus to out of focus.
