I haven't entered a challenge in a while so I decided to shoot a quick photo for this one. "Obsolete" is an interesting theme, because there really isn't much that is obsolete. If it still exists and is in someone's posession, it is useful for something.

This old camera belonged to my great uncle. It is a Zeiss Ikon "Ikonta". It's a medium format (120/220) fold up camera that is in perfect working order. I use it occasionally when I'm in the mood to shoot black and white film. Everything about this camera is fully manual. It doesn't even meter the light on its own. This, by today's standards, is completely obsolete as far as usability is concerned. It works well, but it's just ineffecient. There are cameras on the market today that make life much easier and do as good a job as this one does.

My title, "Family Album", describes several occasions of being obsolete. My great uncle used this camera to make photos for his family album. During the last 5-10 years, the simple concept of the family album has all but changed. Since most everyone can afford a digital camera now, I wonder if the physical family photo album with 4x6 prints is on the decline? Most of my friends who have computers and digital cameras don't print much of what they shoot. If they want to show me their latest family photos, I have to follow them to a computer to see them. When their computer crashes, they tell me that they had been meaining to make a backup of all those photos. The new age of digital photography may produce a generation of people with no old family photo albums to browse with their kids and grandchildren. The age of convenience and immediate gratification will probably make the traditional family photo albums obsolete.

Just saw this one. Up here in Minnesota, family albums are going stronger than ever. Creative Memories, the first big scrapbooking company was started in a garage not far from my house. Women have parties to sort photos and discuss the layout for their next album. So, at least for this area, they run no risk of becoming obsolete.
Nice picture. Must be a joy to handle that camera.

Very well done. I love the close composition and the black and white -- or sepia -- tones to it. Very appealing to look at.
