I just have to say that I love shooting in raw!

I didnt enter the macro challenge this week, and was feeling kinda empty without an update button so I decided i would shoot something for this. My only idea was to take a photo of a spiral staircase. So i had to hunt one down at my university and I actually think this might be the only one! I set my camera on the ground at the rough center of the staircase and shot away. Who needs tripods anyways?

post processing - raw conversion, crop, duotoned, curves, usm

I thought this was coxi's, but then it would have been more wide angle... very nice shot, but i think the idea is overdone.

You should SO make a print of this. This is one of the best shots I've seen on this site lately. How cool that they hung that interesting chandelier there. :) Even though I'm not entering competitions anymore, it's photos like this one that keep me coming back to check out dpchallenge.

This is great. I love it when I look at an image and think 'what is that??' and suddenly realize what it is a few seconds later.

I like the bit of stair in the upper righthand corner. I think it balances the image, plus it adds a diagonal slash through the composition which fits with the others lines.

I reckon that without that small distracting element in the top right hand corner this photo would be just about perfect. This is another great entry from you, Nico, I'm really enjoying your work at the moment and looking forward to seein' more.

Nice one and congrats on the ribbon,
Alex

At least you have some small circles in there ... but I not that the basic impact of the photo comes from a spiral, note a circle--usually the voters are so pedantic about things like that, I'm pretty (pleasantly) surprised at this seeming change in voting perspective. well-done photo regardless degree of "meeting the challenge" ascribed to it--congrats on the ribbon!

For this contest everyone who has the word âcircleâ in their title is getting a max 10 score. This is a copy and paste version that I am including in every photo that I upgrade to 10 due to the title. We as members of DPchallenge need to be reminded of the topic of the challenge â we really need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo. If circle is in the title and it is appropriate I will give a 10. I am sorry if you do not agree with my method of voting â but scores are all I have. (oops, you dont have the word "circle" here, but who could argue with a blue ribbon? Congrats!)

this is gorgeous. i think i may have cropped the top right out, to give the photo more balance, and help the line on the left accentuate the curvature more, but i still love it. :)

This shot has everything going for it, except for the top right corner... - lots of tone, contrasts, silhouettes. It does seem a very tight crop to the left - having the stairwell in it's entirety would have really boosted the dynamics of this image. Still, I'm voting in the upper quartile.

nice leading lines and cirlces. - nice comp
imho i whould have either cropped the top closer to remove the bit of the stairs to the top right or included the whole of the line in the image from bottom right to top right.

07/08/2005 09:11:49 PM
Very nice. I'm not sure if a spiral counts as a circle, but I'm going to pretend it does (afterall, it's only perspective that makes this not look totally circular, right?) 9

I couldn't comment on this last night becuae I was a bit speechless at the moment...I think my brain had somewhat shut down after so many un circle images..and then I happened upon this image and saw that there was hope, and I was happy. The light is gorgeous and the clarity quite nice...the tonality is delicious...superb...very nicely done...I hope this will do well.

Wow. That's a super image. Love the light and contrast and movement created by the repetition of railing. I know it's hard to put an organic shape in a rectangular box. I do wonder if the crop on the right isn't a little close.

This site and the voters can get me down at times and then there are times like this. When I see a photo as original and as well composed as this and realize that my photo gets to compete against it. Its like playing in the major leagues and this can only improve my own abilities.
