I was one of your 9's - I really love this image. I'm not sure exactly why; it looks intensely honest to me. When reviewing the results of this challenge I was shocked to find this back in the pack, rather than up front, as I believe it deserves. I like it even more on 2nd glance.

They look like nice parents to me. A very good, unpretentious photograph that nevertheless reveals something intimate about the character of the subjects; just what a family photograph should be. 8

Seems realistic and comic thereby. What seems to be a remote control in the hands of the male adds to that feeling. The lightning seem alright but maybe litle hard on the male. Think it might have been better with wider corping. Showing more of there "natural environment" - maybe more retro feeling.

meets the topic well but I don't like the way ma's shirt blends in to the color of the sofa, this needs some light coming from the other side

This is too much of a snapshot. Lights are too light, darks are too dark. Subjects are staring off in to space. Nice try.

I love that he's holding the remote and looks standoffish and she looks like she's about to say something. I wish you could have taken the picture down behind them, it's a little distracting because of teh hard edges. I also would have liked to see the woman's entire hands, they seem to be cropped in an unnatural spot.

Posing mom to turn her head at an angle and work with the shadow a bit more I think might have been a nice addition. Asking them to sit in a slightly different place so you don't have the bottom quarter of a picture frame in the background or tacking up a sheet for a backdrop would have been nice too ...

a very shallow dof would have enhanced this pic even more. good candid/portrait except for the background.

I love the light in this image....so pleasing and warm...such a pleasant candid image, very genuine and real...Dad is of course watching the tube and Mom is doing otherwise...a lovely moment...I like this very much.

this would be great with a different angle rather than being shot straight on. good subjects, just change the angle

Great setting and beautiful parents. The mom is much clearer with sparcle in her eyes.

In a word... snapshot. This looks very uncomposed, almost accidental. To improve this type of shot, I would suggest some interaction between the two subjects, i.e. touching, or looking at each other, etc. Also bring them closer together which will allow you to focus close on the faces thus avoiding distracting BG items (picture frame, etc).

The photo behind them is a tad distracting. This might have worked well in black and white. The focus is good but it seems to be lacking some oomph.
