The selective B&W doesn't really work for me in thsi shot. - 5

very small submission, and not sure that selective desat really works in this image

Would this have been improved if at least one of their faces was visible so that the viewer could see their expression?

Selective desat wants to make the animal the subject, but its facing the wrong way. Girls is fighting to be the main subject, but is B&W. I'd prefer the crop to the girl's elbow, would help the composition a bit, I think. Focus is very crisp, even far into the background from what I can tell, pulls a bit of attention away from the foreground. Mostly, I suggest you use the full 640 pixel width allowed, it makes a world of difference to the viewer. I like how the beast (donkey?) is coming into the photo, good eye on that. I think there's a lot of potential here if there were no desat, or totally B&W & the girls were moved to get a better view of the donkey nose & the girls arm & hand feeding it. Just so you know I'm not hammering your photo, it is nice, I'm giving it a 6.

the b&w girl and background doesn't appeal to me in this image. she's key as well and gets kind of left out.

I like this shot. Zoo, to me at least, doesn't mean "animal", but animal(s) plus people. I would have liked to have seen only the ground desaturated and maybe a slightly different angle where we could see one of the faces or to focus on the interaction of the two. Anyway, you've set yourself apart from the pack by having more than just an animal - 7.
