Hi Bruce. I liked this photo the moment I saw it because it isn't one or those everyday flower shots you see all the time. You have set it up very well and including the vase into your image to bring in the blue was a very good idea. Did you put some blue coloring into the water? Effective here is also that there is sediment and a leaf in the water instead of just pure clean water.
The lighting is very interesting, it seems just right. Not too harsh and not too dark although the rose could have been a little lighter. The decision to lighten the yellow flower from behind is what gives this photo its charachter. The glow around the edges of the yellow flower lifts it out as the main subject. The red rose is kind off pushed into the background through this effect though and in a way looks a little out of place. The shallow DOF also adds to this effect. I would prefer to have seen the red rose fully in focus.
The composition is good, the black background works well and the border in neutral gray fits as well. Good work.

The backlighting works very well, although I would have wished for more sharpness throughout. |

Great compostion!! Love the stuff (leaves) in the water. Bit longer DOF to have the rose in more focus to match the other one. The front flower appears more of a light orange color to me, but who cares. (C: |

very interesting backlighting. I think the rose should be within the dof/focus range. |
