Shows great detail. I like the rustic"ness". the lighting appears a little harsh on the wood, though.

I like the choice of subject, it's nicely observed. And the focus on the subject is crisp.

The problem I see you wrestling with is that this is a challenge about wood, so that ought to be the subject. Yet the nail has subverted your intentions. It has upstaged the wood, and the wood is the background or it is a supporting cast member. When faced with this choice, I have tried to err on the side of making a good photo over meeting the challenge. Most viewers will vote on the quality of the photo and give some latitude so long as you show you tried to meet the challenge. In this challenge, two of the more memorable of the photos use wood as a secondary element rather than as the primary subject.

So... what does al this have to do with this simple photo? The nail is the subject. And it is a handsome one. Somehow, the space around it seems odd. Since the nail is essentially vertical, we expect the space that frames it to be esssentially vertical. Or at least it seems to me that much of the space to the right of the nail is wasted. Similarly, I would wish for a little more space at the bottom of the photo. On one hand I love the fact that the knot is nicely focussed; on the other, I see how well the out of focus wood frames the nail and I wish more of the wood near the nail were more out of focus. And I realize you can't do both.

What a gnarly piece of wood. The rusted nail really helps set the perspective and 'feel' of this shot.

a very interesting shot. When I first looked at it I thought that the wood was actually a swirling ocean. Didn't know it was wood. As I look at it closer, that trick of the eye really makes this a great composition. Your title indicates you saw the same thing, since you used a nautical term.

a little over sharpend

Nice shot. Seems over sharpened, though

oversharpened, too much contrast

over sharpened..

I love the rusty nail but the wood seems quite overexposed. The detail is good around the knothole.

I love the contrast between the nail and the knot in the wood.

Interesting macro . . . it seems that the light is a bot too harsh. I also think that the nail is too close to the front border. Good idea.

too over-processed for my taste
