Challenge: Rain (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: Flagstaff, AZ - N. San Francisco Street
Date: Aug 13, 2005
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/200 sec
Galleries: Sky, Water
Date Uploaded: Aug 14, 2005

This is a hand held shot taken from inside my car in the midst of a heavy downpour of rain and small hail. I hoped that the spatter of droplets on the window would add to a feeling of getting wet. I don't usually attempt lightning photography during daylight, much less handheld, but the bolt that entered the frame flickered long enough to be captured during a short 1/200 sec exposure. The short exposure also allowed the capture streaks of falling rain and hail backlit by the clouds.

Post Processing:
Selectively enhance color saturation and contrast with curves in Lab color space. Sharpen the L channel. This helped tone down purple flare on the lightning as well. Apply burn brushing to sky for drama. Add border.

Nice capture. IMHO, the wet window is a bit of a distraction though. Still, great shot.

Nice catch & natural framing. Very rainy feel. Lightning seems to be the subject, but feels too far away. Maybe the droplets obscure too much.

Great capture! I like how it's dark, but there is still great detail in your trees. Good job.

wow, what a creative way to show the rain. great capture and framing. just for your hardware's sake, I hope that water was on a piece of plexiglas or something, and not on your camera!

One of the better taken through a window from the safety of home shots. The natural framing works well.

cool capture.
I don't know if it would have worked, but I think it would have looked better if the raindrops had been in focus instead of the trees?
