G'day from the Critique Club!!!
I have sat here for the last 15 minutes reading all the comments and staring into your image. You have aimed for a time of the past that has great meaning to you. I feel you have almost succeeded in your venture.
The historical meaning within this image is unknown to many viewers but after studying this text on this page it has been made clearer to me. I feel that is a letdown in some area as I like to see an image tell a story without the need for text. Text always finishes a project off nicely but the initial story must come from the image first.
The sepia finish to the image isn't as strong as I feel it should be. Maybe going for a darker hue would bring it across more to the viewer. The noise within the image isn't quite strong enough for that era.
The layout of the shoes is very dramatic...that has come across very well....although I feel some of the detail has been lost within them.
The sky area seems to be separated by a white line...this is distracting to the image overall...although I find the large white area to be conducive of that era.
The lighting over the buildings is excellent and you have maintained great detail over that area. The DOF you have chosen was spot on to bring the image together overall.
The overall composition is excellent. You have chosen to include diagonals as well as horizontal levels which gives the viewer much to look at. The wider area of the water leading up to the bank on the other side directs the viewer into every detail of this image.
In general, I feel you have done very well to try to capture a moment in time but I feel with a few adjustments you will reach the level you were originally after.

Memento Mori means Remember Death. During the time of Holocaust of Hungarian Jews they were herded to the banks of river Danube, forced to get off their shoes and then shot one by one into the icy river.
This is a monument of this tragedy made of a row of sculptured shoes not far away from the building of Hungarian Parliament.
The picture was taken at very high water and very dull weather, and I tried to make it look a bit like the photos taken in those times of the winter 1944-45 (Levels, Hue/Saturation, Colorize, Shadows/Highlights,Contrast USM)
Thanks everybody for their votes and comments, I was very happy reading them. I guessed you would be a little puzzled, but after all quite a many of commenters have found out that this is in connection with death somehow or other. This makes favor to the picture and to the commenters themselves as well: DPC teaches us not only to take better photos, but to read and understand the subtle language of pictures as well. Thanks to all of you! |

This is one of those shots that takes a little study to fully appreciate. I love the antique tones and feel. Great focus & DOF (albeit not the normal type that you see here). This shot works so well - I'm instantly transported to another place and time - and I feel like I'm right there smelling the breeze off the water. Hauntingly powerful shot. Kudos... |

I have no idea what is going on here but I like it anyway! The tones and the grain work and even the emptiness of the river seems essential to the mood. 9 |

Great capture, love the color treatment! Makes it look authentic 1930, pushed beyond :) Hope you do well, would be nice for a change to get a shot like this up there.
Good luck ;-)
PS: Is it taken in Budapest? |

Wow, how did you get the unearthly glowing effect in the sky? I also like how this shot left me puzzling, and therefore required me to go and find out the cultural references and meaning of the title. Pity you put a great lump of iron post right in shot though. |

Interesting toning but strange effect with the light around the buildings and hills. The object in the front is in the way. 7 |

i do not know what mori means - but this image gives me a eiry feeling that a bunch of people took off thier shoes and committed suicide. I do not feel the post compliments this almost perfect and very emotive image |

Interesting picture, and creative. I think it would've looked better in color and a little less grainy. And it probably would've looked fine without the border (to me), but good job. |

This may be one of the best pictures I've seen in a while, it just leaves the viewer wondering it really does, and the post-processing is marvelous as well... Of course the pole there is really misplaced but it really doesn't interfere the picture. This is a beautiful conceptual piece, left to the viewers interpretation, you just wonder, what are the shoes doing there? Did they have an owner that just jumped into the water? Or did they go there all by themselves...A 10 for a magnificent out of the box shot |
